The beginnings of Enrique Ponce are an example of precocity in bullfighting. Being an eight year old boy, his grandfather Leandro MartÃnez, who also wanted to be a bullfighter and instilled in his grandson the love for bullfighting, takes him to fight his first calf. A year later, with only nine, he kills his first calf.
His first public performance takes place in Chiva at a charity festival when he is only 10 years old. Later he participates in the contest 'Monte Picayo looks for a bullfighter', where all those present are impressed by the intelligence, the self-confidence and the art of a child that at such an early age is already emerging as a gifted of bullfighting. As winner of Monte Picayo, bullfighting a bull in Valencia and leaves on the shoulders of the door.
In addition to the grandfather Leandro, Enrique Ponce, born in Chiva (Valencia) on December 8, 1971, has a bullfighting background in the figure of his uncle-grandfather, the Valencian bullfighter Rafael Ponce 'Rafaelillo'.
Another proof of his precocity is that when he was ten he entered the Taurine School in Valencia and that at twelve, and faced with... the difficulty of fighting in his area, he traveled to Jaén, where he fought a festival in Castellar de Santistéban. There he meets the one that is still his agent, Juan Ruiz Palomares and debuted lights in Baeza on August 10, 1986.
Jaén is key in the forge of the bullfighter boy because it opens the possibility of fighting a lot in the field and participate in celebrations without picadors that are organized in the area. Ponce learns the trade well and prepares for the next stage of his career.
It is only two years that separate the first time he fights lights of the debut with picadors, which takes place in the Plaza de Castellón on March 9, 1988 with young bulls Bernardino PÃriz and Curro Trillo and José Luis Torres on the poster. That afternoon is shown as a bullfighter with a future and that same season is presented in places of great responsibility as Seville and Madrid, where he fights for the first time on October 1, 1988. That season wins the Golden Shoe Arnedo, great prize prestige among the novilleros.
The name of Enrique Ponce sounds so strongly in his first season as novillero that in the following of 1989 he already leads the junior ladder with 59 novilladas.
